This book was very predictable, but it had its share of twists and turns. As I read this book, I was reminded time and time again of both the “Red Queen” and “Hunger Games” series, but I liked that this series isn’t a complete copy. I really enjoyed this book when I first read it, and quickly pre-ordered the sequel, which didn’t disappoint. Kai and Paedyn are the classic “enemies to lovers” trope, complete with sarcastic banter and swoon-worthy moments, but are each is well-written. I own the third book in the series, but I’m not jumping at the chance to finish it. Overall, this series is well written, upbeat, and I’m glad to have found it, but it’s not anything out of the ordinary. Boy and girl meet, they’re enemies, they fall in love, etc. I liked it, I read the sequel, and I might sometime pick up the third one. However, if predictable romance books are right up your alley, and you fan over the classic tropes, then this is definitely the series for you!

I liked reading about the trails and the elites, but I absolutely with a passion hate love tringales. Kitt and Kai wasn’t really even a love triangle like everyone knew it was going to be Kai, but even the slightest hint of a love triangle I automatically just can’t do it. I liked the ending with Kai letting payden go, I thought that was a good ending, I’m not sure if I will read the sequel.

I loved this book! I rated it a 4.5 out of 5 stars. It was a basic romance fantasy but I think what made it more enjoyable for me was the characters. There are certain characters that just stand out in a book to me that made me fall in love with the book. Pae was an enjoyable character who had her moments but Kai was my favorite for sure. I would highly recommend this book!

If you like cliche romantasy, you will like this book. It is cookie-cutter, and it manages to hit every popular trope. Paedyn gives Celaena, Mare, and Juliette vibes. It’s not bad, in fact, I love her witty character, and I think Kai is decent. Kind of cliche as well. I didn’t really care about Adena’s death until I read her novella; then I cried. She was really sweet. Personally, I couldn’t finish the sequel to this book since I got bored, but overall this one was fun to read!

This book was amazing. I only have one critique. Why did Adena have to die!!! She was the cutest, most innocent character ever. I loved her, I don’t understand how she was even in the trial because I thought it was limited to contestants only. I was convinced that it had to be an illusion, and when it wasn’t, I just had to sit there in shock because what!!! The ending was crazy, I genuinely didn’t think Paedyn was capable of killing the king because he was played up as being ultra powerful during the whole book. Obviously, he wasn’t THAT powerful because she took him down after having her skin literally carved by a sword. I’m also mad at Paedyn for switching between the two brothers over and over. Like I would do the same thing because they’re both sooo dreamy… but come on girl save one for me!! Overall, AMAZING book, and I will be reading the rest of the series. 100000% Recommend!!

Overall, I enjoyed this book. This was my second time reading it. It reminded me of the Selection book series and The Hunger Games. I really liked when Paedyn brings Adena to the castle.
