This book was very good. I liked how Almueda was able to connect with her father even though there were difficulties with language at the start. It was heartwarming to see both Xavier and Almueda learning eachothers languages to get to know eachother better. I would recommend this book.

This is such a beautiful book! I loved all the art in each panel. I think all the themes portrayed in this novel are so well done, the diversity, the inclusion, all while developing the main character, Alumeda. I loved all of it!

There are so many good things about this book, like how Alumeda and her father grew closer to each other, and how you can have your biological family, but you also have a family you can find through your community. However, there were many unrealistic things about this book that didn’t sit right with me. Who sends their daughter to their father, whom they have never met in their life, and who can’t speak English? And then once she gets there, everyone, including the adults, is mean to her because of her identity and other factors she can’t control, like the fact that she doesn’t know Spanish or a single thing about her father’s culture that she has no understanding of. And the random insertion of homophobia that was never brought up again in the story was very odd. In my opinion, if you are going to bring up a problem like that, you should cover it more and explain through the story that it is not okay to think that, and how it is a world problem people face. Overall, it was a good book, but some parts that the author did not expand on really bothered me.

I really enjoyed Brownstone. My favorite part was the transition of her feeling an outsider to her having friends and strong ties to the town.

Overall, I enjoyed Brownstone. It was a very short read. I really enjoyed how they showed the relationships between Alumeda and the community grow. Especially, the dynamic between her and Xavier(her Dad).
