If you know me you know I am a certified Sabaa Tahir hater. Which is why I will reluctantly say that this has been the best of her books that I have read so far. I was able to get into the book a little bit, but I could still spot the plot twist from a fantasy island away. If I was forced to reccomend one of her books I would reccomend this one.

I decided not to fill this out until I read the Ember in the Ashes series as well. But now with the knowledge from the prequels, I can fully understand all of the worldbuilding for all of this world. The fact that AIZ was the monster that Quill and Skylar were attempting to find. This is such a rich book steeped in culture, and I love it!

Wow! I’m so happy to have read this book revolving around three main characters: Aiz, Sirsha, and Quil. Reading Sirsha’s POV, with its action-packed, heart-pounding tracking journey, violence, smart tricks, and a pinch of magic, was so much fun. I can’t wait to read the second book this summer!

I did not like this book. It felt unnecessary long, and honestly I feel like not that much even happened. It was also really confusing. There were so many characters, tribes, countries, and other aspects that were really difficult to keep straight, and it didn’t help that the story was told from the perspectives of Sirsha, Quil, and Aiz. I also feel like for how long the book was, the action at the end was relatively abrupt. I felt like nothing was happening, and then they were suddenly at the Kegari camp, the monster was Div, and the Tel Ilesi was Aiz. It was just a lot to follow along with.

Let me say… woah. I didn’t read the previous series tied to this one, and honestly, I’m not sure I will. I don’t read any books in the third person, so it was definitely a switch-up. It was a push-and-pull book for me; sometimes I’d get hooked on the storyline, and others, not so much. In the first few chapters, I remember being sort of confused about piecing together all the different parts of a story, but the more I read, the more I grew to enjoy it. The world-building? Entertaining. The fantasy? Written really well. THE YEARNING FROM QUILL? I never wanted to put his chapters down. Aiz was so interesting to read about because I had to literally set the book down at some of the moments (cough cough the cave) because it was so crazy reading through those things and basically the manipulation. Overall, I’d say this book was a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

I really like this book. This was my second time reading it. I like how it’s connected to The Ember in the Ashes series while not directly following the same people. I also like how they show Aiz’s perspective on the events.
