Fine Arts Day and the Rest of the Year

Hello!

I hope that you and your family have enjoyed your Spring Break.  I wanted to give you an update on events at Northside, and also share with you several additional opportunities that are available to your child.

We had a wonderful Fine Arts Day!  We had three acts between which students rotated in the morning.  This included the “Maple Leaf Squares” who spoke about, demonstrated, and taught basic information about America’s original folk dance: The Square Dance.  Mr. Puentes sang and played on his acoustic guitar a variety of songs.  Finally, Mrs. DeGarmo and several high school students demonstrated the art of pottery, making several examples that will be displayed in the art room and shared with students.  During the morning, the Middle School Jazz Band and Swing Choir performed a number of exciting selections for us, and in the afternoon we were honored to have the Junior/Senior Choir come sing for us a wide variety of music.  To end the day’s festivities, our two Northside ensembles performed their pieces for the school.  Thank you to everyone who assisted in helping to make this day a very positive one for our students!

Welcome Back!

Hello Northside Parents,

Welcome back! I hope you all enjoyed a great summer. Events for this year are already underway. We are again using the Spotlight on Music series in all grades as a basis for all music lessons. We also incorporate a variety of other resources on a daily basis to create a fuller Music Education experience.

3rd grade students have received recorders and have begun Recorder Karate. Using this system, students receive belts for each song they are able to play. The belts start simple with the white belt’s “Hot Cross Buns” and make their way up to the black belt’s more advanced “Ode to Joy.” Students may come in for extra practice during specified morning and lunch recess periods.

4th and 5th grade students will also spend time this year revisiting Recorder Karate and will also have the opportunity to test for belts.

Check back soon for updates regarding our Christmas Programs.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. My email address is meckwall@geneseoschools.org, and the phone number at Northside is (309) 945-0625. Please also check often for updates outside the music room and here on my district blog. Pages for each grade are listed at the top of this page.

Thank you, and I look forward to another great year!

Sincerely in Music,

Mike Eckwall
