Probably the best overall aspect of using WordPress is its seemingly never ending library of plugins.¬¨‚Ć In a school setting with primarily Mac’s one easy way to capture Video (with Audio) is to use the program Photobooth – easy to use – fun for students and staff.¬¨‚Ć To post and embed one of these videos into WordPress is simple using the plug-in WordTube or the Add Video button.¬¨‚Ć WordTube works with the latest version of WordPress as of the time of this writing (2.9.2) and easily accepts movies from Photobooth.¬¨‚Ć You can download version 2.2.2 directly from Here – or better yet add it through WordPress directly – see Podcast Below.
First off the advantage to using WordTube is that you can resize a movie, embed it directly in a wordpress post/page and use a built in player to start and stop.  If you use the built in Add movie button in wordpress you will save time but the movie will open in a different windows and will appear only as a link in your post.
Here is a Podcast on how to get WordTube, convert – upload – and embed a movie from photobooth nicely into A wordpress Page.
Here content created from a teachers Macbook in Photobooth uploaded to WordPress.  Here is a sample movie from Photobooth Embedded into WordPress using the WordTube Plugin.  (I also embedded my screen podcast using this plugin as well).
I came across a great plugin for WordPress today that simply makes your website look good and work easily on an Iphone.  The theme is called WPTouch and it is free and setup is almost effortless.
You can download the Plugin from the admin console of your wordpress, and simply click Activate.
After activating the Plugin – Here is a screenshot from an Iphone.
The Plugin Preserves media content and images, and overall makes reading and navigating the website pleasant from an Iphone.
You can read more about the plugin from the authors website here.
If you are not happy with the default settings, you will find under the wordpress settings WP-Touch panel – almost all themes icons, colors are customizable.
Having managed a number of Windows 2003 Servers and optimizing various Windows Desktops you will quickly see the built in disk defragment tool is lacking in speed and efficiency.¬¨‚Ć Especially in the server environment the built in defrag tool simply fails to defrag a large variety of formats, backup sets, log files, etc.¬¨‚Ć Having tried a multiple products over the years, idefraggler, Ultra Defragmenter, my defrag, contig, and Auslogics Disk Defrag – it is clear that the latest version of Ausologics Disk Defrag¬¨‚Ć is ahead of the competition.
The latest revision of this free utility tops that of many of its commercial competitors.¬¨‚Ć This is the safest, quickest and most overall effective disk defragging software available – free.¬¨‚Ć Although Disk Defragging is not a common day to day activity – it is nice to have a utility that can accomplish this task in minutes rather than hours.
I would recommend this tool for anyone running Windows Operating systems Windows XP, Vista, or Server 2003.  If you are already running Windows 7 or Server 2008 I would stick with the built in utilities as Windows has done an excellent job upgrading the scheduling and functionality of this utility in their latest iterations of the Windows OS.

Recently I came across a Lenov0 Y710 gaming version laptop with a broken keyboard. A quick look at the machine and I could see that this keyboard was held in place by 4 screws and a by some clips. Unlike other IBM thinkpad and Lenovo models this model(Y710) and the (Y510) do not have replacement keyboard parts available for purchase. The approved way to have this keyboard replaced is to send it to Lenova who will replace it for around 150-170$.
Looking at similar Lenovo models it turns out that although they don’t officially sell this replacement keyboard – another Lenovo keyboard is identical and works great.
To replace this keyboard look for a keyboard with a part number 39T7417.¬¨‚Ć Strangely if ask Lenovo they state that this keyboard is not compatible – when in reality it is identical and works great.
I found this part from laptopexperts.com and from buy.com http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=212000765&listingid=51020421
Order Details:
————————————————————————
Quantity: 1
Item: Laptop Keyboard
(39T7417)
Unit Price: $35.10
Total Price: $35.10
————————————————————————
sub total: $35.10

As you can see from my order receipt that 47.34 looks a lot better than 150-170$ from Lenovo, plus you don’t have to ship anything in and do not have to wait 2 weeks.
Keyboard is a perfect match.
Recently, actually very recently as in last night and today I noticed that the DNS servers for my home service provider were down(ISP Mediacom).¬¨‚Ć Mediacom does a good job with internet service in this area but they have had a little trouble from time to time.¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć After a couple of quick network tests I determined that the problem is with my ISP’s DNS servers.¬¨‚Ć This is not the first time I have noticed that their DNS servers have been comprimised so I decided to look for an alternative solution.¬¨‚Ć For most users simply wait and your ISP will promptly fix this issues but for those of you who are a little more hyper like myself and want a fix that will work without calling tech support, read on.
First off for those reading this who are not familiar with the functions of a DNS server (Domain Name Servers) here it is in a nutshell.
Computers like numbers and not names, therefore when you tell your computer to visit www.yahoo.com a DNS server translates this name into a number (IP Address) which your computer likes.
Okay so maybe I overly simplified a bit but this at least gives the basic premise.
So if you can visit Yahoo by clicking on this  http://www.yahoo.com then your DNS servers are working perfectly.
If you cannot visit Yahoo by the using a domain name but can visit by using this link http://69.147.114.224 then you have a DNS issue.
Google now offers free dns servers that work regardless of you ISP (in most cases) and are fast and efficient.  Also they are easy to remember
Google Free DNS Servers
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
To fix a pesky home internet connection or for another useful tool to help troubleshoot overall Network (Specifically DNS server issues) it is nice to have these free servers available.
If you suspect that you may have trouble with DNS, simply edit your Network Configuration leaving DHCP intact but clicking the box to fill out manually DNS servers.
Here is how it may look on a windows machine:
Or better yet simply change your DNS settings on your home wireless router and all computer connecting to it will use the new DNS server.
Look for the WAN connection under your wireless routers setup utility.
If you are a network administrator and maintain your own DNS and DHCP services, having google’s DNS servers listed as a secondary or even thrid option in DHCP is also a good way to provide a little extra if something ever goes amiss.
I discovered a recent bug with 10.6.2 Snow Leopard in which the iPhoto Library folder is not correctly synced at login and logout.¬¨‚Ć This annoying issue leaves each user with a prompt to decide if they should keep the network copy or the local copy of the iPhoto library even though neither has changed.¬¨‚Ć This results in duplicate iPhoto Libraries being created as each user logs in and out – Since most users chose keep both copies the iPhoto library is duplicated.
You can see that this quickly can be a problem with our 2000+ users syncing to an Xserve Raid duplicating the iPhoto library over and over is unacceptable.  A quick search through the apple forums shows that this issue has been acknowledged although no fix is yet available.
Here is my fix using Terminal and ARD.  The key to this fix is using the nifty unix command of find.
To clear up the sync issues it is necessary to run the equivalent of this command on both the end machines and the server which house the mobile home directories.
On the server end run this command as root.
√√∏sudo find /path to user home directories -name “iPhoto Library-“* -exec rm -r {} \;
This command will search for each instance of a directory called iPhoto Library-, notice the – sign with this in place this command will not delete the users original iPhoto Library but will instead only delete each synced duplicate – this is because they are in the name format of /Users/user/Pictures/iPhoto Library-local-local-network or something similar.
This is the command I ran on the server which houses half of all mobile home directories.
To clear up the duplicates on all of the client machines it is necessary to run an identical command on all machines.  The easiest way I found to do this was to use ARD and use the UNIX command
Here selecting all user workstations I run as user ROOT the same command starting the find command in the Users directory.
Here are the command results, if you look through them you will see that it says error /users/user/iPhoto Library-local-local does not exists – this is because the command was successful and that it deleted all traces of the duplicated iPhoto Library.
I hope this temporary fix may help others since Apple can be slow at time to release fix similar issues.  If this issue becomes frequent I will followup with a command to alter the permissions on the iPhoto Library file and to examine the sync preferences to determine where this problem first arises.  For now I plan to run these commands as necessary and await an official fix from Apple.
I
I have run across this issue from time to time when removing spyware and viruses off of a windows XP machine.  In the past I have been so frustrated at this problem that I ended up reformatting and installing an OS.  The good news is that this problem is now easily fixable with free tools available online.  First off this problem is typically caused by malicious software altering a specific registry key.  This Registry key is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Under this there is an entry for Userinit
What typically happens is that although the virus software has removed the offending software this value is left set at
Userinit = C:\Windows\System32\Winlogon82.exe  (or some other virus)
This value needs to be set to
Userinit = C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe
The tricky part now becomes how do you adjust the registry of a windows machine that will not allow me to login even in safe mode.¬¨‚Ć There is where the Offline NT password and Registry editor becomes useful – visit http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/ and download and burn the a CD boot image of this product (or floppy boot image if you have an old school machine).
Or you can download directly from here below – T his is a Zip file of the ISO.
Offline NT Password and Registry Editor Version 080802.zip
This version allows you to view and change the registry from a command line – simply navigate to the affected key and then change with the value listed above and the problem is fixed.
I was at Sam’s Club the other day and saw a Demo HD television playing the Blue Ray movie “TinkerBelle’s Lost Treasure”.¬¨‚Ć Although I was not impressed with the movie I was completely impressed with the picture quality of a Blue Ray playing at full 1920 x 1080 playback.¬¨‚Ć Having lots of old computers and computer parts in my home along with a newer HD Samsung television I decided to try and build a HTPC that could playback Blue-Ray’s in full capacity, hold my personal media collection and stream Netflix Movies at the highest quality settings possible.
To work with I have an older Dell Dimension computer that has the Intel 915 Chipset and Pentium 4 hyperthreaded processor set at 3 ghz.¬¨‚Ć With this Intel Chipset upgrading the processor to Dual Core or Core 2 Duo was not possible so I am sticking with the Pentium 4.¬¨‚Ć After reading review after review of Video cards I came to the conclusion that the ATI 4670 Graphics board was the best fit – having 300 stream processors, an HDMI output and full digital audio.¬¨‚Ć This card also is capable of off loading the CPU intensive task of decoding Blue-Rays and providing a full 1920 x 1080 resolution on my Samsung HDTV.¬¨‚Ć If you had a more robust processor you could probably get away with using the ATI 4350 which costs only around 40$, in my case I needed a step up to make up for my aging system.¬¨‚Ć There seems to be some disagreement on the internet as to whether a Pentium 4 can handle Blue_Ray playback,¬¨‚Ć I can say from experience it can handle it perfectly if you are using it in conjunction with a robust video card (pci-e).¬¨‚Ć For the Operating System I went with Windows 7 Pro as this OS offers great performance, slick interface, and is fully compatible with the ATI graphics Card.
75.00$ on new egg  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125277&cm_re=ati_4670-_-14-125-277-_-Product
For Memory I eeeked out having 2 gigs of total RAM at 800 mhz – in addition I added a 2 gig flash drive to the back of the machine and dedicated it to Windows Ready Boost for faster caching.
For the Blue Ray Drive I purchased a 67.99$ unit on Newegg.com.  This drive comes with PowerDVD version 8 with Full HD and Blue-Ray playback capability.
One tricky element or having a working HTPC in the house is configuring a remote to use the machine.  Here I suggest two options: a friend of mine showed me a Iphone Ipod application called Air Mouse.  This easy app lets you control the HTPC with an IPOD or IPHONE and works well.  Since I use this HTPC to surf the web I decided to also try a extended range wireless keyboard and trackpad.
I chose this Adesso model off of newegg and have been very happy with its function.¬¨‚Ć Works from easily 35-40 feet away from the television – responsive, small, easy to type.¬¨‚Ć The only downside was it was a little pricey at $85.99.¬¨‚Ć http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823166047&cm_re=addesso_wireless_keyboard-_-23-166-047-_-Product
Just a note: watch out for cheap wireless keyboards and mice from Logitech (and other brands), if you check the range on most models available at retail stores like Wal-Mart it maxes out at around 5-6 feet.  In my opinion a wireless keyboard with a six foot maximum radius is worthless.
Finally Adding a wireless pci card (could use a USB one as well) this unit connects to my Home Network.¬¨‚Ć With the Network Connection and adjusting the visual settings on Windows 7 for best look on a televsion (larger icons, text, ect) everything is set.¬¨‚Ć Honestly the frequently used feature of the HTPC is streaming Netflix – using this computer to stream netflix results in a much clearer and contrasted image than streaming from Xbox or Playstation 3.¬¨‚Ć With a $8.99 a month subscription you get unlimited movie streaming which equals 70,000 available movies and television programs – A Super Redbox in the home.
For Storage I installed an Internal 1000 Gigabyte RE3 Western Digital Sata drive.¬¨‚Ć This is a server class drive (5 year warranty) that is fast, reliable and not too expensive.¬¨‚Ć Again at newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136313 159$.¬¨‚Ć With a sizzable collection of children’s television shows and movies stored on DVD – I simply copied all of them onto this massive hard drive making it an all in one media center.
Main uses of the HTPC
Stream Netflix (This is outstanding)
Play Blue-Ray movies in full 1920×1080 resolution
Stream Digital Music from Pandora.com or Playlist.com
Play MP3/Music Collection
Store and Display family photos
Run Boxee – Vast collection of online video streams
It has been brought to my attention that Office 2008 is a little buggy and can crash from time to time running on Snow Leopard.  I have looked into the issue on a couple of machines and have decided that the crash seems to occur when trying to open files through Words Open button.
If a user clicks on this Open button on Word 2008 after the third of fourth document is opened simultenously a memory leak occurs and the program beach balls.  The only resolution is to force quit.
A working solution is to open all documents directly through finder instead of from within Word.  Below is a short 2 minute podcast showing demonstrating this problem and showing how to do the work around.

****Updated ******* IMPORTANT NOTE¬¨‚Ć -¬¨‚Ć I learned the AT$T does not allow Internet Tethering and that this is grounds for termination of service.¬¨‚Ć Thus I have re – disabled the tethering feature and have just left the MMS photo tweak.
Often when a new firmware for the Iphone OS comes out I quickly jump on it and update. In the case of the new Iphone 3.1 I decided to hesitate because it appears that features are removed rather than enabled in this OS. The newest OS for the Iphone enables the ability to send MMS photos but removes the ability to use Internet tethering.  With the original firmware 3.0 (and 3.0.1) you can enable Internet Tethering on the IPhone, this is a feature I find quit useful when traveling. Doing a quick Google search you will also find that you can easily enable MMS photo text messaging on firmware 3.0 without upgrading to 3.1.
With Internet Tethering it is easy to connect a MacBook to the internet via USB or Bluetooth.  With Bluetooth on or with the USB cable the Mac OS will prompt you that it has found a new internet connection.
To enable MMS photos on Firmware 3.0 you need only to edit one preference file in Itunes and simply update the carrier manually through Itunes (Hold Option and click on Update – select new carrier file 5.5).¬¨‚Ć Before connecting the Iphone to Itunes open Terminal and type
Two simply tweaks leave firmware 3.0 with more features than 3.1 unless I am missing something.
