4-Professional Responsibilities

Evidence for Domain 4 is primarily collected by the teacher and examined through conversation. Teachers can refer to p. 92-108 of Enhancing Professional Practice: A Framework for Teaching for information on Domain 4. The following ideas were suggested by our staff for examining Domain 4.

4a. Reflecting on Teaching

  • written/recorded reflection with suggestions for future improvements
  • professional conversation with colleagues

4b. Maintaining Accurate Records

  • timely Skyward entries
  • student binder of work
  • collection of family/medical authorizations
  • equipment ordering and inventories

4c. Communicating with Families

  • teacher blogs/newsletters
  • student reflections/newsletters to families
  • log of parent contacts, emails, notes

4d. Participating in a Professional Community

  • curriculum/grade level collaboration
  • attending team/department/grade level meetings
  • sponsoring/coaching extracurricular activities
  • helping at school events
  • serving on leadership teams

4e. Growing and Developing Professionally

  • NBTC
  • participation in professional organizations, online forums
  • attending in-services, workshops, conferences
  • continuing education
  • professional learning communities
  • mentoring new teachers or student teachers

4f. Showing Professionalism

  • compliance with school regulations
  • advocating for students (using both data and individual situations to develop fair procedures)
  • taking a leadership role in decision-making teams
