Evidence for Domain 2 is primarily collected through observations done within the classroom. These may be done by administrators, colleagues, or self/peer video analysis. Teachers can refer to p. 64-76 of Enhancing Professional Practice: A Framework for Teaching for information on Domain 2. The following ideas were suggested by our staff for examining Domain 2.
2a. Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport
- clear expectations for behavior (posters, role-playing, holding students accountable)
- clear expectations for participation in groups (rubrics and observation)
- character education lessons
- utilization of techniques for equitable participation (i.e., name sticks, tokens)
- model language and behavior
- attendance at student activities
- student questionnaires/surveys to learn about students’ interests
2b. Establishing a Culture for Learning
- model curiosity and thinking
- project-based learning/student-developed activities
- differentiated instruction (all levels can learn)
- quality rubrics establish high expectations for everyone
- student reflections/surveys
- thought-provoking displays
- display of quality student work in classroom or online
- revisions, multiple drafts, applying feedback, remediation
- behavior referrals and interventions
2c. Managing Classroom Procedures
- established roles and routines for instructional and non-instructional times (i.e., bell-ringers, returning papers, before school, recess, bathroom, lunch, after school)
- time limits for activities
- transition techniques
- instructions for volunteers, paraprofessionals, and substitute teachers
- clearly labeled bins/centers/equipment
2d. Managing Student Behavior
- posted rules/syllabus
- established roles and routines
- redirection techniques (i.e., verbal, nonverbal, teacher proximity)
- seating chart dictated by activity in lesson plans
- behavior contracts/charts for whole groups or individuals
- contact with parents, administrators, and guidance counselors
2e. Organizing Physical Space
- seating charts, learning centers, equipment, based on ability and activity
- items/areas clearly labeled
- incorporation of technology
- accessibility and safety of equipment
