504 Plan

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act is a federal civil rights law that has been in effect since 1973.  For many years its main thrust has been in the area of employment for individuals with disabilities.  However, within the last 20 years, the Office of Civil Rights (OCR), charged with the enforcement of Section 504, has become proactive in the field of education of individuals with disabilities.  As a result, schools have begun writing 504 plans to ensure access to education and non-discrimination for students with disabilities.
