This message intends to provide information related to changes in the start of school for the 2017-18 school year.

The first day of student attendance for all school buildings will be moved to Wednesday, August 23rd.  We will dismiss one hour early on that day.

We will also dismiss one hour early on Thursday, August 24th and Friday, August 25th.

Teachers will report on Monday and Tuesday, August 21st and 22nd for teacher inservice days.

The Back to School “Backpack Night” for elementary schools will be Monday, August 21st from 4-6 pm.  The Middle School Back to School Night will also be Monday, August 21st from 5-7 pm.  The High School Back to School Night will be Tuesday, August 22nd from 6-8 pm.

Freshman Orientation at Geneseo High School and High School New Student and Parent Information Night both remain on Wednesday, August 16th as listed on the High School Calendar.

We do not have information yet on when we will make up this two day change, but as soon as we have those calendar changes, we will let you know.

While construction is progressing extremely well, we know that we will be making final adjustments, furniture moves, cleaning up key areas, and ensuring that everything is operational right up until our start day.  Therefore, we believe that these extra two days will enable us to best ensure student safety, and we can plan for as many logistic contingencies as possible.

Know that much more information will be forthcoming related to other events, and you can look for additional information coming directly from the buildings themselves.  We will also try to keep you as current as possible on the District website, Facebook page and other social media and print outlets.

Thank you for your patience, cooperation and support as we work through these final details.  We wanted to give you as much information as possible and as much time as we could for you to prepare for this change in schedule.  Thank you and have a wonderful Weekend.

Update on Back to School Information

Note from the Superintendent: Many of you have been asking about “Backpack Nights”, “Back to School Nights”, when is school really going to start, etc? So let me put some quick information out to all who follow this site. As it sits today, we are still hopeful we will be able to start school on August 21st for student attendance (with an hour early dismissal).

We are tentatively planning for Back to School Nights on August 17th at the elementary schools from 4-6 p.m., and at the middle school from 5-7 p.m. Because of concerns about the final construction at the high school, especially around the front entryway, we are holding off on their Open House until Monday evening, August 21st from 6-8 pm (yes, students will have already come to school that day).

I emphasize that we are hopeful we will be able to open school on the 21st, but remember there is roughly $27M of construction coming to a quick close over the next 20 days. Everyone craves certainty, and trust me, I would love to be able to tell you that everything will be finished, cleaned up, put back and ready for children to arrive by Monday, the 21st; but we are still a few days away from finalizing all of those dates and times.

All of you– staff, students, parents, community members have been very patient through what is now roughly 16 months of construction at 4 different schools– and we ask for continued patience and flexibility. We will let you know of any possible changes, or firm confirmation of dates/times as soon as we can.

So this is what we know for right now. Thank you for your consideration, your cooperation, and your anticipation of fantastic new learning spaces for our children– while we want this to be ready for today, we know we want it completed correctly for this and future generations!

With great excitement– Scott Kuffel, Superintendent
