2017 Girls Track
2017 Firefly Award Winners
The Firefly Award is given to girls who provide maximum effort, exhibit positive attitudes, and overcome obstacles. The girls chosen for this award exhibit those qualities at times when they think no one is watching and their light helps pave the way for others.
NIB XII Indoor Conference Award Winner: Rebekah Beard
Rebekah has been a leader for other athletes throughout the early portion of the track season in the classroom, on the track, and in the community. She has worked tirelessly to better herself and her efforts have started paying in gold. Rebekah earned a gold medal in the triple jump after waiting several hours for the event to start, running in the 4×200 meter relay between jumps, and besting the second place finisher with her final jump of the day. Rebekah also ran a strong leg of the fifth place 4×400 meter relay team to finish out an impressive day!
Sterling Gold Medal Invite Award Winners: Brynn Johnson and Alex Horne.
Brynn always has a positive attitude and competes with a GIANT passion. She did not back down from the challenge of facing her first high school meet. After missing twice and facing elimination, Brynn stepped up big and cleared opening height and went on to further her mark in the pole vault to earn a personal record. She then competed in the 200 meter dash using starting blocks for the first time and earning another personal record!
Alex showed her grit while fighting a tough group in the high jump. She bounced her way to a first place finish after clearing five feet; a personal record that qualified her for the Illinois Top Times meet and is only one inch shy of the qualifying standard for the 2A State Meet in May. She didn’t stop there as she went on to earn another personal record in the 200 meter dash. Alex’s positive attitude helped set the tone for a great meet!

FYI: As many of you probably know, Coach Driskel will not be joining us this season as our distance coach. At this time, Coach Graves and I will be working with the distance group. We will also be working more closely with the boys program to ensure that your practices and meets will be covered adequately. I know this is not ideal, but we will all do our best to make sure this works out if we do not find a qualified coach before the start of the season. Thanks for keeping a positive attitude and mindset. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. email@example.com
